LUBBOCK, Texas -

updated 10:05 p.m. Thursday - The visibility has dropped dramatically this evening. It'll likely stay low through morning. With the temp in the 20s there could also be some icy patches on roads, especially bridges. The NWS has posted a freezing fog advisory for much of our area, shown in green below. It runs through 10 a.m. Friday.

freezing fog advisory

posted Thursday afternoon - THIS AFTERNOON: We started with freezing fog and the temperature in the 20s this morning. Since then it's been a nice recovery, with lots of sun for most of our area. It's also warmed up. That's not the case east of Lubbock, off of the Caprock, where it's stayed in the 30s with low clouds. Here in Lubbock we've made it to the 50s, with it near 70 in Southeast New Mexico at Hobbs and Lovington.

TONIGHT: The clouds that stayed east of Lubbock today will probably build back west. Also freezing fog is possible through sunrise Friday, maybe with some freezing drizzle east of the city.

FRIDAY: It's going to get even warmer with a W-SW wind 12-22mph. High in Lubbock near 68. It'll stay colder again east.

forecast high temp

COLD WEEKEND: We'll get a few pushes of cold air for the weekend, the first arriving to knock Saturday's temperature down. The stronger push of cold air will arrive Sunday.

Saturday will be mostly sunny, high in the mid 40s, wind NE-E 5-15mph. Some low clouds will probably be around farther east, off of the Caprock.

Sunday will be a colder and breezy day, high in the low 30s. The wind will make it feel like the 20s during the afternoon. There might even be some light snow or mixed wintry precipitation Lubbock and points east. At this point it doesn't look like anything significant...though the roads are dangerous enough when they're clear on New Year's Eve. Even a few patches of ice can make it worse.

The temperature will be in the teens, wind chill may be in the single digits right at Midnight to ring in 2018.

Monday will be even colder, morning low near 10, afternoon high in the mid 20s with some clouds around.

NEXT WEEK: The temperature will moderate some, but it'll be a slow climb through mid-week. We're not even getting the full blast of this cold air. Pretty much any location northeast of our area will have it even worse for cold air this weekend through next week.

7-day forecast

Have a great rest of your day. Bobby will have a full update here early tomorrow.
